WH DANUBIUS – Forest Holdings in Slovakia

Slovakian WERTHOLZ subsidiary WH DANUBIUS, s.r.o., based in Kláštor pod Znievom, owns around 1,800 hectares of woodland in Slovakia, managed by three operations. The around 15,000 solid cubic metres harvested by all four operations each year are supplied to buyers based in Slovakia, Austria and Germany.

In an effort to comply with sustainable forestry management principles, investments have been made in all operations over recent years, primarily in the improvement of infrastructure. In total, around 60 km of forest roads along with several forest storage sites have been established for handling timber. This enables efficient and state-of-the-art forest management, ensuring the continued viability of the forestry operations, both ecologically and economically.

Leles

The forestry company called Leles is situated near the Ukrainian and Hungarian border near Kráľovský Chlmec at an altitude of around 100 m above sea level. Some of the roughly 800 hectares of woodlands are located in the Latorica wetlands, other parts grow on sandy dunes or on gentle hills in sandy loam. The forest is a floodplain forest with all sorts of different trees, but mostly oak, acacia, ash, beech and poplar. The company also owns another 1,300 hectares of agricultural land and employs staff to manage it.

Gemerská Ves

In Gemerská Ves there is a forestry company that manages around 550 hectares of forest. Further 250 hectares of agricultural land also belong to the operation. Gemerská Ves is situated between Rimavská Sobota and Rožňava and covers gentle hills with loamy soil, at altitudes between 197 m and 303 m. Native trees to the forest operation that covers around 550 hectares are mainly oak trees. In 2013, forest road construction was completed, facilitating access to the operation’s woodlands.

Kráľova Lehota

Kráľova Lehota, another forest company, is situated around 45 km east of Ružomberok in the Lower Tatra at an altitude of 720 m to 1,150 m. The main tree species growing here are spruce and pine. Covering an area of 99 hectares, it is the smallest forestry company belonging to WH DANUBIUS in Slovakia. Even so, the entire forestry operation was made accessible with new forest roads in the course of the new investments.
